The 83rd Academy Awards

A year to prepare for the most important night in film should be enough time to not make a mistake.
However, every year the Oscar dresses get divided into the ‘Hits’ and ‘Misses’. So in a typical fashion I present Oscar stars who got it right and the stars who clearly wore the first thing that fell out of their wardrobes. (Helena Bonham Carter will forever be considered an anomaly)
Ricardo Tisci’s becautiful beaded dress for Givenchy’s Spring/Summer haute couture collection desperately needed an appearance. Cate Blanchett I salute you for being the woman to do this. The blonde bob and minimal jewellery show off the interesting shoulders and back perfectly.
The Fighter actress, Amy Adams looked stunning in royal blue L’Wren Scott dress. She finished the look with a Cartier watch and necklace.
Michelle Williams more than makes up for the daisy patterned school teacher dress she wore to this year’s Doldren Globes in a beautiful cream embellished dress from Chanel. Simple earrings from Harry Winston leave the dress as a talking point.
Natalie Portman looked more radiant than ever wearing a gown from the Black Swan costume design team at Rodarte. The deep plum colour set her apart from the other stars and her Tiffany Rubellite Tassle earrings added a glamourous touch.
Mila Kunis has not had a bad moment during award’s season and the Oscar’s were no exception. Wearing a floaty Elie Saab gown in a complimentary lilac hue, Kunis looked every part ‘The Hollywood Star’.
Florence Welch stays true to her personal style in Valentino. The vintage style dress looks like it was designed with the singer in mind. I only wish she would have done something different with her hair…
Annette Benning was the hottest 52 year old at this year’s Academy Awards in a Naeem Khan sparkling column dress.
Winter Bone star, Jennifer Lawrence showed off her enviable figure in Calvin Klein complete with Chopard earrings. My only problem with the dress is the neckline resembles something of a Baywatch swimsuit.
True Grit star, Hailee Steinfeld experienced her first Oscar night in a beautiful dress from Marchesa. The 14 year old actress reportedly co-designed the mid-length embellished gown.
And with that we move onto the less than impressive dresses from this years event. Let’s begin with the worst dress.
Jennifer Hudson has lost a lot of weight and it is understandable that she would want to show off her new figure. However any dress that makes your boobs looks like that should never be worn. The colour screams Valentino but it is in fact Versace/worst dress of the Oscar’s.
Origami, embroidery, pleats, cream. An awful combination of concepts that made up Nicole Kidman’s Dior dress this year. She should have left the choker in the Moulin Rouge dressing room and done something to revive her dull hairdo.
Now I am not too sure if Anne Hathaway’s usual stylist, Rachel Zoe had any part in this (I’m going to hope she didn’t) but it certainly doesn’t look like the work of a Hollywood stylist. Despite being another Valentino creation; the ruffles are too busy and the fabric looks cheap.
For me, Gwyneth Paltrow will never look as good as she did at the 2007 Oscars. She oozed old school Hollywood in a chiffon pink gown by Zac Posen and this year her Calvin Klein dress was a little boring. Even Louis Vuitton Jewellery couldn’t liven it up..
Reese Witherspoon surprised me with her dull choice in Armani Privé. The dress and hair do however remind me of a plain version of Julia Robert’s ensemble at the 2001 Awards Show.
Finally we have Helena Bonham Carter in Colleen Atwood, the costume designer from Alice in Wonderland. This year even the critics have given up trying to mould Helena into the perfect Hollywood film star and with a Union Jack garter, hidden under her dress, Helena reminds everyone that a personality outshines the dress.
