3.1 Philip Lim Pre-Fall 2011

29/12/2010 § Leave a Comment

Philip Lim presents his Pre-Fall Collection for 2011. An array of dresses, jackets and knitwear in shades of orange, pinks, grey and blue; with the occasional charcoal tailored piece. Expect lots of leather, fur and crotchet.

It would appear that next year’s winter collections will not differ too much from 2010′s cosy knitted outfits.

Is Leighton Meester the new face of Missoni?

Leighton wearing Missoni

Five days after it was reported that co-star Blake Lively would be the new face of Chanel bags, rumours have emerged suggesting Meester is to front a new campaign for Missoni.

The actress is currently appearing in Vera Wang’s fragrance advertisements and if the rumours are true, her adverts would run parallel with Margherita Missoni’s fragrance campaign.

Speaking of Hermès, they have made the greatest pair of boots ever.

If you think about how many times you’re going to wear them, paying £1400 doesn’t seem that much.

Christophe Lemaire S/S 2011

In May, it was announced that Christophe Lemaire would be replacing Jean-Paul Gaultier as the Creative Director of Hermes. After successfully re-sculpturing the Lacoste Brand since 2000, Lemaire will launch his first collection for the 173 year old French company at the next Paris Fashion Week.

So until then I give you Christophe Lemaire S/S 2011. A middle eastern insprired collection.

Last year he caused controversy by casting transgender model, Lea T, in his A/W campaigns.

This year, creative director, Riccardo Tisci, has broken the mold again using albino model, Stephen Thomas, in his latest campaigns, shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.

Stephen Thomas, from the now defunct, Ugly Modelling Agency, is positioned behind supermodel, Daphne Groeneveld, whose hair has been bleached white to match his.

The rest of the ads will feature models Mariacarla Boscono and Iris Strubegger.

Blair Waldorf, the girl that single handedly made the hairband a sought after accessory is going to be waving goodbye to the Upper East Side. Meester feels she needs to ‘explore other things’. Luckily for us, she still has two years of her contract left. However producers think the show could be over by then.

What is going to happen to Dorota?!

So, I felt an extreme need to look back at Blair’s greatest outfits. After all we only have two years of capes, hairbands and corsets left.

Margaret Howell has found a certain level of success in both mens and womenswear since launching her label in 1972. Her designs are effortlessly British and her S/S 2010 Collection showed a comfortable yet chic line of clothing.

Paul Smith showed his first menswear collection in 1976 and since then has become an icon for British tailoring. Trenchcoats, scarves and of course suits adorned his S/S 2010 collection in shades of charcoal and navy.

This year’s Ready-To-Wear Emerging Talent Award has three strong nominees.

Mary Katrantzou is a Greek-born graduate of Central St Martins. Her S/S 2009 Collection showed influences in Pop Art and Art Deco prints with block colouring and clever use of panels.

Meadham Kirchhoff is the visual creations of Edward Meadham and Benjamin Kirchhoff. Like Katrantzou, they both studied at Central St Martins and after a brief menswear line they branched out into their current label. Each collection experiments with a different theme from 2009′s S/S denim collection to 2011′s S/S acid doll look.

Dutch designer, Michael van der Ham, is the final nomination in the category. Also a graduate of Central St Martins, van der Ham wowed audiences with his textured designs, made from vintage fabrics, at this year’s London Fashion Week.

Designer of the Year is ultimate award. The nominees for this year’s award are Christopher Kane, Erdem and Phoebe Philo for Céline.

Christopher Kane established his label in 2006, producing bandage dresses in neon colours. That year he was awarded Young Designer of The Year at the Scottish Fashion Awards and launched a capsule collection for Topshop. Since then he has worked with Kylie Minogue on her 2Hearts video, Donatella Versace on her Versus (Versace) Collection and Lancôme, making his own limited edition lipgloss.

Phoebe Philo began her fashion career as Stella McCartney’s design assistant at Chloé and has been credited as making the label ‘cool’ again. The Paddington bag was created by Chloé under Philo and was the ‘It Bag’ of the time. In 2008 Philo was appointed the creative director of Celiné, producing a basic but beautiful clothing range.

Mary Kate and Ashley’s new clothing range for The Pennsylvania Dutch.

07/12/2010 § Leave a Comment

Remember when Mary Kate and Ashley decided to launch their own clothing labels? Not the pre-teen ASDA/Walmart stuff.

The Row: their high fashion couture line and Elizabeth and James: their moderately priced, laidback collection.

I remember when The Row was launched in 2007, I read about it in Teen Vogue. It had some beautiful fur coats and tailored suits but due to the exclusivity and price range, purchasing an item from their label became a dream.

The Olsen’s launched a diffusion line called Elizabeth and James, named after their siblings, in 2008. This line featured more affordable and widely available versions of The Row. It received positive reviews and the twins carried on their lives as little fashion junkies.

Personally I had forgotten all about this line until today and upon research realised why the labels are not as reported as they once were…

Let’s start with The Row.

What was the first thing that came into your head? Was it the fact that you need to turn off your electricity and marry at 14 to wear these clothes? The (Amish) Resort 2011 features an interesting show of materials. Leather vests, clunky shoes and some hideous skirt lengths; proving why this label is under exclusivity – to the Mennonites.

Next up, Elizabeth and James.

Here are the four things I liked from this label. Unfortunately I only liked the blazer with the fur trim because it reminded me of something from the first Row collection. The other three things also looked familiar, possibly from high street shops.

These lines aren’t very imaginitive. Selling designs, that can be bought on the high street, with the Olsen’s name on it and a higher price tag is too conformist. Which is something the Olsen’s, in past years, have tried to shy away from.

Marc Jacobs makes skate decks?!

Whilst floating around the Marc Jacob’s facebook page, I came across this:

Marc Jacobs has produced a four piece collection of skate decks featuring photographs from his campaigns by Juergen Teller.

You can have Kate Moss (Autumn, 2000), Lisa Marie (Spring, 2000), M.I.A (Spring, 2009) or Stephanie Seymour (Spring, 2001)

It’s almost enough to make me attempt to skate.

Why I want to be an Albino.

My favourite A/W collection for this year has to be Albino D’Amato’s short skirt/high neckline creations. A simplistic show of capes, dresses and open toed boots in white, caramel, light blue and black. D’Amato specialised in trapeze and A-Line skirt shapes with structures capes and jackets, also throwing in some cropped knitwear. Little features of bows and collars add extra femininity while the leather boots added an edge.
